For this project, I worked as a marine electrician on a Moody 33 sailing yacht berthed at Lady B Marina, Shoreham Port. Following an electrical fault that resulted in a fire onboard, the vessel required a complete inspection and overhaul of its DC electrical system. Upon initial assessment, the existing installation was found to be in poor condition, with outdated wiring practices and safety concerns requiring a complete redesign and replacement of the vessel’s electrical infrastructure.

The project involved a full rewire from the engine systems through to the DC switch panel, with all cabling correctly sized and overcurrent protection added, to meet the requirements of ISO 13297.

As part of the electrical upgrade, the vessel’s battery charging system was also redesigned. The original installation did not include a dedicated mains battery charger, so a suitable charging solution was integrated to improve battery maintenance and reliability when connected to shore power. An automatic charging relay (ACR) was also installed to intelligently manage charging between the engine start and service batteries, removing the reliance on a manual ‘1-2-both’ battery selector switch and reducing the risk of incorrect operation.

The completed marine electrics upgrade transformed the vessel’s electrical system from an unsafe and outdated installation into a modern, reliable, and compliant setup.
