For this project, I worked as a marine electrician on a Bavaria 30 sailing yacht based at Chichester Marina. The owner was preparing to move the vessel from a marina berth to a swinging mooring and required a reliable battery charging solution that would maintain both the engine start and domestic battery banks without relying on shore power.

The project involved installing a 35-watt solar panel on the coachroof, positioned forward of the companionway, together with a dual-output PWM solar charge controller. The setup was designed to provide continuous trickle charging to both the engine start and domestic battery banks, helping to keep the batteries maintained while the yacht was unattended on its mooring.

As part of this boat electrics upgrade, I also installed 12V USB charging sockets throughout the boat, providing convenient charging points for mobile phones, tablets, and other onboard devices. All wiring was completed to ISO 13297 standards, ensuring safe and reliable electrics.

The Bavaria 30 is a fantastic cruising yacht, and with many boats now spending extended periods on swinging moorings, solar charging provides a simple and effective way of maintaining battery health while reducing the need for engine charging or shore power connections.
