The new owner of this Kingfisher 33 fishing vessel, Halcyon was a friendly skipper that got in touch for advice on radar and AIS systems. He was looking to fit the boat out in Sovereign Marina, Eastbourne, before heading north to take her to her new home in Orkney. We decided to opt for an iCom MR-1010RII Marine Radar, linked to an iCom MA-510TR AIS transceiver. The MR-1010RII Marine Radar is a 4 kW radome radar system with a 36-nautical-mile range and a wide-view colour TFT display. It includes simplified ARPA target tracking, AIS overlay, and DSC integration. The MA-510TR Class B AIS Transponder is a compact standalone AIS unit with a 4.3-inch colour display. Both systems run on 12 and 24 volt setups.
Once ordered and received, I travelled over to Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne to meet the skipper and his crew to install the radar and AIS. The DC switch panel was already well ordered, and gave easy access to the wheelhouse where both displays would be mounted. Whilst I concentrated on the electrical side of the setup, the skipper’s crew helped with mounting the radar scanner unit, AIS aerial and GPS receiver. As it fell dark, the setup was turned on and tested, and worked perfectly. The entire install had been completed in a day, ready for the 5-day trip up to Orkney. Thanks to the great team work from the skipper and his crew, it was a pleasure working as a marine electrician on this fantastic Kingfisher 33.
